Gold Coast Caravan Buyer's Guide: Hinterland, Border Runs & Beyond

    Gold Coast Caravan Buyer's Guide

Gold Coast buyers tow into some of the best country in the state — Springbrook, Lamington, Mount Warning just over the border, and the Byron/Ballina/Yamba stretch heading south. Here is what we point out to Gold Coast locals before they buy.

    Where you'll actually tow

    • Broadwater, Currumbin, Kingscliff — easy coastal weekends
    • Springbrook, Numinbah, Lamington — steep hinterland, tight bends
    • Northern Rivers NSW — longer bitumen runs to Byron, Ballina, Yamba, Iluka
    • Scenic Rim west — Boonah, Killarney, Stanthorpe wine country

You want a van that is comfortable at 100 km/h on the M1, but also happy on a hinterland climb behind a mid size 4WD.

The three things that catch Gold Coast buyers out

    1. Overheight garages and shopping centres. A 3m+ tall van will clip a lot of GC underground carparks. Measure before you commit.
    2. Beach access rules. Most Gold Coast beaches are no tow zones. Plan storage or a stopover before you hit sand.
    3. NSW border trips. If you cross into NSW regularly, be aware of the slightly different road rules for towing (following distance, speed limits with heavy trailers).

    Setup we recommend

    • 17 to 22ft van with a proper ensuite
    • Independent suspension — the Springbrook and Beechmont roads are rough
    • Solar + lithium so you can free camp at spots like Killarney Falls or up on the Border Ranges
    • A decent annexe — Gold Coast heat means you live outside the van 8 months of the year. Our Great Annex Co fit outs are built for exactly this

    The trip south

A lot of our Gold Coast owners plan the run down the NSW coast in their first year. If that is you, prioritise:

    • Water capacity (180L+) — free camps south of the border are drier than QLD
    • Grey water tank — increasingly required at NSW national parks
    • Proper 12V fridge/freezer setup — the runs between towns get longer

    Servicing without the drive

We are about 90 minutes north of Southport in Burpengary. Most Gold Coast owners bring the van up for a service or upgrade, spend the day in Brisbane, and pick it up on the way home. We can also arrange mobile service for straightforward work on the coast.

Drop us your tow vehicle, budget and where you want to end up in the next 12 months, and we will shortlist vans that actually fit — not the ones we most want to move.

    FAQs

    Finance & towing questions

The questions Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast buyers ask us most.

Caravan finance is typically a secured loan over 3 to 7 years, with the van itself as security. We arrange finance through our partner Finetic, who compare lenders for competitive rates on new and pre loved vans. Pre approval takes your budget guesswork away before you shop, and you can model repayments with the finance calculator on any van page.

Not always. Zero deposit finance is available for many buyers, depending on the lender and your circumstances. Putting 10 to 20% down usually reduces your repayments and total interest, so it's worth comparing both scenarios before you commit.

Compare the caravan's ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) with your vehicle's braked towing capacity, then check you still have room in your GVM, GCM and towball download limits once the van is loaded. Our towing calculator does the maths for you, and our Burpengary team will sanity check the combination before you buy. Every van comes with its weighbridge docket, so you know its real weight, not a brochure guess. Use a public weighbridge to check the loaded combination.

New vans come with the manufacturer's warranty (terms vary by brand and model, and we handle claims in our own workshop), current build standards and the chance to spec your own layout. Quality pre loved vans cost less and often come with upgrades already fitted, though pre loved stock is available from time to time only. Ask us what's coming in. Either way we'll walk you through the trade offs with no pressure.
