Lithium vs AGM Batteries: Which is Right for You?

Sunrise Caravans2 March 20262 min read

G'day, fellow tech heads and off grid enthusiasts! Steve here from Sunrise Caravans. One of the biggest questions we get asked in the showroom is: "Should I go lithium or stick with AGM?" It's a great question, and the answer depends on how you travel.

Let's break it down so you can make an informed decision.

    What's AGM?

AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries are a type of sealed lead acid battery. They've been the standard in caravans for years and are a reliable, proven technology.

    Pros:

    • Lower upfront cost (roughly $200 to $400 per 100Ah)
    • Widely available
    • No special charger required
    • Proven, reliable technology

    Cons:

    • Heavy (about 30kg per 100Ah)
    • Should only be discharged to 50% (so 100Ah = 50Ah usable)
    • Shorter lifespan (300 to 500 cycles)
    • Slower to charge
    • Performance drops in extreme temperatures

    What's Lithium (LiFePO4)?

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are the newer technology rapidly becoming the standard for serious caravanners.

    Pros:

    • Much lighter (about 13kg per 100Ah)
    • Can be discharged to 100% (so 100Ah = 100Ah usable)
    • Much longer lifespan (2000 to 5000 cycles)
    • Faster charging
    • Consistent voltage output until nearly empty
    • Built in Battery Management System (BMS)

    Cons:

    • Higher upfront cost (roughly $800 to $1500 per 100Ah)
    • Requires a lithium compatible charger/solar controller
    • Some won't charge below 0°C (BMS protection)

    The Real Cost Comparison

Here's where it gets interesting. Let's compare over 5 years:

AGM Setup (400Ah for 200Ah usable):

    • 4x 100Ah AGM batteries: ~$1,200
    • Replace every 2 to 3 years: ~$2,400 total
    • Weight: ~120kg
    • Total 5 year cost: ~$3,600

Lithium Setup (200Ah for 200Ah usable):

    • 2x 100Ah LiFePO4 batteries: ~$2,000
    • Last 7 to 10+ years: $0 replacement
    • Weight: ~26kg
    • Total 5 year cost: ~$2,000

Over time, lithium actually works out cheaper — and you save nearly 100kg of weight!

    Which Should You Choose?

    Go AGM if:

    • You're on a tight budget right now
    • You mostly stay in powered caravan parks
    • You only camp off grid occasionally
    • You're happy with the extra weight

    Go Lithium if:

    • You love free camping and off grid adventures
    • You want to maximise your solar setup
    • Weight savings matter to you
    • You plan to keep your van long term
    • You want a "set and forget" solution

    Our Recommendation

For most of our customers at Sunrise Caravans, especially those planning to do any amount of free camping, we recommend lithium. The upfront cost is higher, but the long term value, weight savings, and performance benefits make it a no brainer.

Many of our new caravans come with lithium battery options, and we can also retrofit your existing van. Pop into the Burpengary dealership and we'll help you work out the best power setup for your travel style.

    Finance & towing questions

The questions Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast buyers ask us most.

A practical off grid setup pairs lithium batteries (12V, 24V or 48V), enough solar to replace what you use daily, a DC to DC charger and an inverter sized to your appliances. We specialise in off grid power builds and can spec a system around how you actually camp.

Caravan finance is typically a secured loan over 3 to 7 years, with the van itself as security. We arrange finance through our partner Finetic, who compare lenders for competitive rates on new and pre loved vans. Pre approval takes your budget guesswork away before you shop, and you can model repayments with the finance calculator on any van page.

Compare the caravan's ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) with your vehicle's braked towing capacity, then check you still have room in your GVM, GCM and towball download limits once the van is loaded. Our towing calculator does the maths for you, and our Burpengary team will sanity check the combination before you buy. Every van comes with its weighbridge docket, so you know its real weight, not a brochure guess. Use a public weighbridge to check the loaded combination.
