Sunshine Coast Caravan Buyer's Guide: Best Vans for Coast & Hinterland

    Sunshine Coast Caravan Buyer's Guide

Sunshine Coast buyers usually want two things out of one van: an easy weekender for beach and hinterland trips, and something that can handle a proper lap when the time comes. Here is how we help Sunny Coast locals pick the right rig.

    The local use case

Most Sunshine Coast owners we deal with are towing to:

    • Coolum, Mudjimba, Cotton Tree, Noosa North Shore — short coastal runs
    • Kenilworth, Maleny, Montville, Mapleton — hinterland with tight, hilly roads
    • Rainbow Beach, Inskip Point, Fraser (K'gari) — sand and soft ground
    • The inland run west — Kilkivan, Kingaroy, Bunya Mountains

That mix rewards a van in the 17 to 21ft range with independent suspension, decent ground clearance, and a payload you can actually use.

What we recommend for Sunshine Coast buyers

    1. Semi off road as a minimum. Even "bitumen only" trips up here involve dirt access tracks and pothole heavy hinterland roads.
    2. Independent trailing arm suspension (or better) — coil or airbag setups make a big difference on the range roads.
    3. A shower/toilet combo. Sunshine Coast van parks fill fast in school holidays, and self contained means you can free camp confidently.
    4. Off grid ready. Solar + lithium is close to mandatory if you want to enjoy places like Inskip or the Bunya Mountains without generators.

Watch the towing weights on the range

The Blackall Range climbs are no joke with a heavy van behind a smaller SUV. If you tow up Maleny or Mapleton regularly:

    • Keep at least 10 to 15% headroom on your tow rating
    • Fit an electric brake controller properly (not just clipped in)
    • Consider a weight distribution hitch for anything over 2t ATM

    Servicing and support

We are 45 minutes south of Caloundra in Burpengary, which is close enough for warranty work, annexe fit outs, and off grid upgrades without a big trip. Our workshop handles servicing, insurance repairs, and custom fit outs — most Sunshine Coast owners drop the van on a Friday and pick it up before the next weekend.

    Finance and trade in

Same deal as our Brisbane buyers — Finetic pre approval within 24 to 48 hours, honest trade in valuations, and the finance calculator on every van page shows you a realistic weekly or fortnightly repayment before you enquire.

Send us the van you are eyeing off, your tow vehicle, and where you like to camp, and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.

    FAQs

    Finance & towing questions

The questions Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast buyers ask us most.

Caravan finance is typically a secured loan over 3 to 7 years, with the van itself as security. We arrange finance through our partner Finetic, who compare lenders for competitive rates on new and pre loved vans. Pre approval takes your budget guesswork away before you shop, and you can model repayments with the finance calculator on any van page.

Not always. Zero deposit finance is available for many buyers, depending on the lender and your circumstances. Putting 10 to 20% down usually reduces your repayments and total interest, so it's worth comparing both scenarios before you commit.

Compare the caravan's ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) with your vehicle's braked towing capacity, then check you still have room in your GVM, GCM and towball download limits once the van is loaded. Our towing calculator does the maths for you, and our Burpengary team will sanity check the combination before you buy. Every van comes with its weighbridge docket, so you know its real weight, not a brochure guess. Use a public weighbridge to check the loaded combination.

New vans come with the manufacturer's warranty (terms vary by brand and model, and we handle claims in our own workshop), current build standards and the chance to spec your own layout. Quality pre loved vans cost less and often come with upgrades already fitted, though pre loved stock is available from time to time only. Ask us what's coming in. Either way we'll walk you through the trade offs with no pressure.
